GLS is seeking to become a group that better represents the richness of the queer, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered community of the Bay Area. This involves developing a space and culture that support and welcome difference. With that goal, the GLS GovCom is participating in the Sierra Club’s large-scale, national initiative called DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion). National Sierra Club has generously offered GLS members a training on June 20th.

If you share our belief that diversity matters, are interested in learning more, and/or have ideas to share, please join us for a powerful day of learning, reflection, and visioning. Note: The facilitators require a full six-hour commitment on June 20th to help create a safe, cohesive community. During the day, we hope you will share your ideas with us. Afterwards, if so inspired, you can join our Diversity Committee and help us get a broader rainbow of queers "out in nature" to explore, enjoy and protect the planet.

There are four areas in which our club could be more representative of the queer community here in the Bay area: younger members; male members; members from different ethnicities; and trans and gender non-conforming members.

On the 20th, Jessica Ronald will give us specific information on diversity, inclusion, and equity; provide skills and techniques to implement change, increase our awareness, and create a safe, supportive environment for us to do some “visioning”. If you attend, you can help us create some goals, do long-term planning, and strategize next steps to support our vision of having GLS membership and leadership reflect the diversity of the Bay Area’s LGBTIQ community.
